NATO countries never prepared for a protracted war in Europe against Russia, — expert

Russia poses a great threat to European security. NATO countries need to help Ukraine and replenish their reserves. Commitments regarding defense investments, which were approved in the Alliance back in 2014, are more than relevant at the current moment. Such an opinion was expressed today, June 14, on the air of FREEDOM TV channel by New York University professor Ihor Eisenberg.

He reminded that these obligations of NATO countries were adopted at the Wales Summit to spend at least 2% of GDP on defense. They were relevant both then and today.

“Of course, they are relevant, because it is clear that the main burden of ensuring NATO’s security is borne by the USA, Great Britain, and France. Germany is less, because Germany is precisely among the countries that until now… I don’t know if this situation has changed, but in any case, before the full-scale aggression of Russia against Ukraine, Germany, as before, did not spend 2% of GDP on defense, although this the obligation stipulates that by 2024 countries should spend at least 2% of GDP on defense. Of course, this is very important, because Russia is a huge threat to European security, since NATO was created, first of all, to protect the security of European countries, then all NATO countries must comply with this decision,” Eisenberg said.

The professor believes that some of the NATO member countries may even spend more than 2% of GDP.

“Some things became quite obvious after the full-scale Russian invasion. That, for example, NATO countries never prepared for a protracted war in Europe against Russia. And now the war has been going on for almost a year and a half, it turned out that there is not enough ammunition, there is not enough of various types of military equipment. That is, all this must be produced, it must be produced in large quantities, because it is necessary not only to help Ukraine, but also to replenish our reserves. And that’s why it became obvious to all NATO countries that this 2% — the decision made nine years ago is more than relevant today,” says Ihor Eisenberg.
