Vytynanka: Ukrainian Art Form of Cut Paper Designs

A cutting-edge craft made in Ukraine. Vytynanka is the name of the Ukrainian artform of cut paper designs.

As traditional as embroidery and Easter egg-writing, paper cut-outs are part of a long tradition of Ukrainian craftsmanship.

“These works are hung just like this, like ‘living’ paper. Under the glass, it stops ‘breathing’ and turns into prints,” Ukrainian artist Olena Turyanska said.

While some Vytynanky feature more conventional patterns, Turyanska represents a younger generation that has revived the tradition with a contemporary spirit.

Traditionally, every Ukrainian region features its own style of Vytynanky. The process itself is unpredictable even for skilled artists. Turyanska demonstrated how the process works.

“By using this technique, harmony and symmetry are achieved automatically. And to some extent, this is my way of exploring the universe. Moreover, it creates shadows which means that the artwork becomes three-dimensional,” Turyanska said.

Among local interior designers, her works are increasingly popular and she’s gaining recognition internationally.
