Johnny, the robot, must grab a load and carry it to a specific destination.
These are the conditions of the World Olympic Robotic Games in Mexico. On the field, teams representing different countries face off. There are a total of eight rounds and a final playoff. Every time, new alliances form.
“Before the match, they needed to figure out exactly which robot will go to which point. In the first matches, we even had a few surprises. It seems that they were set on one thing, but some of the robots did something else entirely. And it’s really a lot of work to solve 20 to 30 minutes before the match,” Ukrainian team mentor Nadia Vladykina said.
The coordinator of the robot’s work in the ring, Inga Manzhulenko is at the competition for the second time. Her partners, Yulia Shevchenko and Maxsym Slipchenko, are newcomers. They collected and programmed their robots together. On the playing field – everyone takes on different responsibilities.
“We were drivers. Maxsym was in charge of running the robot itself, that is, behind the chassis, as he drove. And I was responsible for the manipulator, for lifting boxes and wind turbines,” Shevchenko said.
The teams all built their robots using the same parts. However, the Ukrainians say that Johnny is unique.
Last year, Ukraine took 19th place. This year they rose in the rankings by two places, and they say they won’t stop there. The team is already working on ideas on how to improve their design and increase the efficiency of the new robot.
