The Ministry of Temporarily Occupied Territories and IDPs of Ukraine said that the world community should not accept the transfer of part of Tuzla Island to Russian federal ownership.

The relevant statement was posted on the website of the agency.

“Ministry condemns the illegal actions of the aggressor state and calls on the world community to not accept the transfer of part of Tuzla Island to the property of the Russian Federation, in order to prevent further neglect of the provisions of the constitutional and legal norms of Ukrainian legislation and the fundamental principles of international law,” reads the statement of the ministry.

The ministry emphasized that such actions contradict the constitution and laws of Ukraine, as well as international law, since Crimea remains as an integral part of Ukraine under all international norms and documents.

On April 17, the occupying authorities of Crimea announced the intention to transfer around 6,500 square meters of the island into federal ownership of Russia.

The plot was transferred for the construction of an infrastructure facility on the territory of the island. The Russian Federation will become the “owner” of the site after the delivery-acceptance act. The act is now in the final stage.

Tuzla is a sandy island with an area of 3.5 square meters. It is situated in the Kerch Strait between the Kerch Peninsula of Crimea in the west and the Taman Peninsula of Krasnodar Krai in the east. In 2003, Russia became the cause of a territorial dispute with Ukraine. Russian authorities claimed the 1954 transfer of Crimea to Ukraine had only included the continental parts of the peninsula, even though the island had been administratively part of Crimea since 1941.
