Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that the European side should be represented at any potential leaders’ meeting aimed at resolving the war, including discussions on a ceasefire.
He made the remarks during a joint press conference in Tallinn with Estonian President Alar Karis, UATV English reports.
Zelenskyy stressed that a ceasefire should be the first step toward achieving a lasting peace.
“In order to achieve a ceasefire, I believe it would be better to have a meeting at the leaders’ level. Who should be there? Certainly Ukraine, Russia, and definitely Europe. Ideally, Europe and the United States should be represented. Why Europe? Because we are in Europe. That is the answer,” the president said.
He explained that European countries are also affected by the war, including through drone-related threats.
“This is our land, this is our continent, and we must be confident that tomorrow will be safe. That is why these countries should take part in negotiations on this first important step. Ukraine has the political will for this; we will see whether Russia has such a will. So far, they have not demonstrated it,” Zelenskyy emphasized.
According to the German government, proposals by Germany, France, United Kingdom, and Ukraine regarding negotiations with Russia will first be discussed within the G7 framework and then at the EU summit.
The leaders of Ukraine, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany discussed the conditions necessary for achieving a just and lasting peace during their meeting in London on June 7.
