Following the meeting of the so-called “Coalition of the Resolute” in Paris on March 27, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called for the involvement of the United States in the next such summit, the Italian Prime Minister’s office said in a statement.
At the summit, Meloni reportedly reiterated a proposal to provide Ukraine with security guarantees “based on a model that could be partially based on Article 5 of the Washington Treaty” on collective self-defense.
The Italian prime minister also called for the possible involvement of the UN in the future “implementation and monitoring of the ceasefire” in Ukraine, and advocated an immediate ban on attacks on civilian infrastructure.
Meloni specifically emphasized that Italy has no plans to send troops to Ukraine and “stressed the importance of continuing to cooperate with the United States to end the conflict and achieve a peace that will ensure Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.”
She “expressed hope for the participation of the American delegation in the next coordination meeting,” the Italian government added.
