Akif Cagatay Kilic, foreign affairs adviser to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, shared his view on the main obstacle to establishing peace in Ukraine.

His statement was cited by The Guardian.

According to Erdogan’s adviser, one of the biggest hurdles to a peaceful settlement between Ukraine and Russia is the “loss of trust” between the two sides.

“The main problem is the loss of trust. No one trusts anyone,” Kilic said.

Turkey plays a key role as a mediator in the negotiations and maintains good relations with both Kyiv and Moscow, despite providing military support to Ukraine.

It hosted negotiations in 2022 and has offered to do so again if approached.

Erdogan himself recently urged Russia to “respond constructively” to the U.S. ceasefire proposal.

Notably, following a meeting in Saudi Arabia on March 11, Ukraine agreed to immediately implement a 30-day ceasefire if Russia also agrees to the measure.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the U.S. would relay the ceasefire proposal to Russia and hopes for a positive response.
