Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans has said that Ukraine and its President Volodymyr Zelenskyy should not agree to a deal to resolve the war unleashed by Russia, which could plunge the country into the interwar period, as Russia’s ambitions for a ‘Russian world’ are a nightmare for Europe.
It was reported by The Guardian.
Brekelmans stressed that Zelenskyy should negotiate from a position of strength.
‘President Zelenskyy should not agree to a deal that will lead to some kind of interwar period, when aggression is constantly looming on the horizon,’ the Dutch minister said.
He also added that Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin ‘has made it very clear that Ukraine is not his final stop on his march to the imperial past’.
‘He will continue his aggressive, aggressive efforts to increase the influence and territory of the Russian Empire on his way to his dream of restoring the ‘russkiy mir’, or ‘Russian world’. It is a dream for Putin, and it is a nightmare for the rest of Europe,’ Brekelmans said.
According to him, now ‘it’s time to let Putin wake up and realise that his dreams are not true’.
‘No matter how brutal this war has become, Ukrainians cannot be silenced. They cannot be forced into submission. Ukrainians are fighting on the frontline of our freedom and security against Russian tyranny and aggression. This is the frontline of Europe’s freedom and security,’ Brekelmans concluded.
On Tuesday, negotiations between the delegations of Ukraine and the United States on the settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian war began in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry previously noted that the talks between Ukraine and the United States in Saudi Arabia would focus on bilateral relations and the path to peace.
On Monday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Ukraine would have to make concessions on the territories seized by Russia since 2014 as part of any agreement to end the war.
