Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed hope that the plan proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron, which envisions the deployment of European forces in Ukraine, will not be necessary.

Tajani’s statement was cited by the Italian Foreign Ministry’s press service.

Commenting on Italy’s official stance, he said: “We hope that what Macron proposes will not be needed.”

Like Zelenskyy himself, we believe that the war could end within a year. We have other open fronts and must work on a fair peace agreement… one that respects Ukraine’s position,” Tajani added.

He also ruled out sending Italian troops to Ukraine, either as part of a European mission or a NATO operation.

Another option could be a UN mission, which could act as an interim force after peace is reached,” he suggested.

According to media reports, the UK and France have prepared a plan to deploy up to 30,000 European troops in Ukraine.

Macron has previously stressed that the conditions for ending the war must not amount to Ukraine’s de facto surrender, emphasizing that a lasting peace is crucial for Europe’s security.
