The United States has informed its allies that it intends to stop participating in the planning of future military exercises in Europe.
This was reported by the Swedish newspaper Expressen.
It is alleged that this decision will also affect several exercises directly in Sweden.
According to the sources, the freezing of American participation does not apply to the planning of exercises that have already been agreed upon and will be held in 2025.
“This concerns the exercises that are currently on the drawing board, which means a little later,” one of the sources said.
If the intentions are realized, this means that Sweden and other NATO countries will be forced to plan exercises without American participation or with only small American units.
The United States wants to cut military spending in Europe and direct it elsewhere. Trump has said he wants to prioritize the Indo-Pacific region, with a particular focus on China.
According to The Telegraph, the US president is allegedly considering withdrawing US troops from Germany and moving them to Hungary.
And NBC News reported on March 6 that Trump is considering reducing US commitments to NATO allies.
