U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine is actually a proxy war between the United States and Russia.
He said this in an interview with Fox News.
“Frankly speaking, this is a proxy war between two nuclear countries – the U.S., which is helping Ukraine, and Russia. And it needs to be brought to an end,” he said.
At the same time, he noted that currently, “no one has any idea or plan on how to end it.”
Rubio believes that “statements from Ukraine and its allies about ‘let’s just keep giving them as much as they need’ are not a strategy.”
He added that from the very beginning, U.S. President Donald Trump viewed this as a “prolonged conflict that has reached a stalemate.”
“We have made it clear to everyone that what the president is trying to do here is to find out whether there is a path to peace. We need to engage both sides – the Russians and the Ukrainians. And we have asked Ukraine not to sabotage this process. When the vice president said that such things require diplomacy, President Zelenskyy, unfortunately, decided to challenge the vice president and started questioning whether any diplomacy was even possible here,” Rubio said.
He added that he is “glad” that Zelenskyy has reconsidered his position.
“I truly believe that this is a conflict we need to find a way out of. It will require concessions from both sides, but we must first bring them both to the negotiating table. The Ukrainians must be there. That is obvious because it is their country. And the Russians must be at that table. And only President Trump can make this possible,” Rubio concluded.
