Just over half of Americans say they personally support Ukraine in its war against Russia, but few believe that President Donald Trump is on the same side.
These are the findings of a CBS/YouGov poll released on Sunday, conducted ahead of Friday’s Oval Office meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
According to the poll:
- 52% of respondents said they support Ukraine in its war against Russia,
- 4% said they support Russia,
- 44% said they do not support either side.
Americans are largely divided on Trump’s stance:
- 46% believe his actions and statements have favored Russia,
- 43% think he has treated Russia and Ukraine equally,
- Only 11% believe he has prioritized Ukraine.
Among political parties:
- 56% of Republicans say they do not take sides between Russia and Ukraine,
- 72% of Democrats identify as pro-Ukraine.
About three-quarters of Americans believe that what happens between Russia and Ukraine matters to U.S. interests at least to some extent. However, Democrats are more than twice as likely as Republicans (48% vs. 20%) to say it is of great importance.
When it comes to views on Russia:
- 66% of Americans see Russia as unfriendly or an enemy,
- 41% of Republicans consider Russia a friend or ally, compared to 26% of Democrats who share that view.
Public opinion is split on whether the U.S. should provide Ukraine with weapons and military aid:
- 51% believe the U.S. should,
- 49% believe it should not.
- Support for military aid is significantly higher among Democrats (72%) than Republicans (32%).
On Friday, a heated exchange took place in the Oval Office between Trump, Zelenskyy, and U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. Trump accused Zelenskyy of “gambling with World War III.”
Following the confrontation, European leaders and EU officials publicly reaffirmed their support for Ukraine.
