President of the European Council, António Costa, has invited EU leaders to a special European Council meeting in Brussels on March 6, dedicated to European defense and continued support for Ukraine.
According to Ukrinform, Costa also extended an invitation to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to attend the summit. The full text of Costa’s invitation letter was published on the European Council’s official website.
“I would like to invite you to a Special European Council on 6 March, which will be dedicated to European Defence and to Ukraine… I have invited President Zelensky to come to Brussels on the occasion of the meeting of the European Council to discuss with us the latest developments,” the letter states.
Costa emphasized that the primary goal of the meeting is to continue discussions initiated during an informal summit on February 3. These discussions aim to enable European leaders to make swift decisions to enhance Europe’s sovereignty, strengthen its defense capabilities, and address both immediate and future security challenges.
“As far as Ukraine is concerned, there is a new momentum, which should lead to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace. It is therefore important for us to exchange on how to further support Ukraine and on the principles that should be respected going forward. The EU and its member states are ready to take more responsibility for Europe’s security. We should therefore be prepared for a possible European contribution to the security guarantees that will be necessary to ensure a lasting peace in Ukraine,” Costa wrote.
The meeting will begin with traditional discussions between EU leaders and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola. Following this, there will be a working lunch with President Zelenskyy. Later, EU heads of state and government will engage in a detailed discussion on European defense and Ukraine.
“I look forward to our meeting on March 6,” Costa added.
As previously reported, during his visit to Kyiv on February 24 marking the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine Costa announced plans for a special EU summit focused on strengthening Europe’s defense capabilities and increasing EU support for Ukraine.
