Romanian Foreign Minister Emil Hurezeanu believes that billionaire Elon Musk’s open support for anti-Western Romanian politician Călin Georgescu can be considered a form of interference in the country’s internal politics.

He stated this in an interview with Prima TV.

The Romanian Foreign Minister recalled that Musk had previously voiced support for the far-right Alternative for Germany party and is a “powerful and highly influential figure.”

He added that Musk’s messages constitute “a form of interference in the internal politics of another country.”

At the same time, Hurezeanu emphasized that he was unaware of any pressure from U.S. officials on Romania to ensure Georgescu’s “unimpeded” election campaign, as some media outlets had reported.

“I have not been aware of any actual or explicit pressure from American officials offering services or suggesting that the candidate—in this case, Călin Georgescu—should take a different course,” he commented.

In early December 2024, Romania’s Constitutional Court made an unprecedented decision to restart the presidential elections following a scandal surrounding Georgescu’s campaign.

Georgescu, an anti-Western candidate who unexpectedly won the first round of Romania’s presidential election, was linked to a foreign interference campaign through TikTok.

At the Munich Security Conference, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance criticized the annulment of Romania’s presidential election, questioning the state of democracy in the country.
