German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has warned the U.S. President of retaliatory measures if he follows through on his tariff threats.

Scholz’s statement was reported by Reuters.

His remarks came after Trump announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports to the United States.

Speaking at a campaign event in northern Germany, Scholz made it clear that any new tariffs from Trump would be met with countermeasures.

“At the moment, since nothing is official yet, we can only speak with great caution but also with great clarity: whoever imposes tariffs should expect tariffs in return,” Scholz told journalists.
