British Prime Minister Keir Starmer supports Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland, according to his spokesperson, Dave Pares, as reported by Bloomberg.
In response to journalists’ questions about whether the British Prime Minister respects Denmark’s sovereignty over the territory, Pares affirmed:
“Of course, Greenland is part of Denmark,” he stated.
Bloomberg highlighted that this is the first time Starmer’s government has publicly backed Denmark in the ongoing diplomatic tension among NATO allies.
“Denmark is an important ally. It is a key member of the Joint Expeditionary Force, a vital partner on migration issues, and a crucial NATO ally,” Pares emphasized, while refraining from commenting on U.S. President Donald Trump’s statements.
In recent weeks, Trump has revived his interest in purchasing Greenland, a strategically important, resource-rich Arctic island that is part of Denmark. Similar statements were made during his first presidential term.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio insists that Trump’s comments are not a joke.
On February 3, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated Copenhagen’s stance ahead of the EU leaders’ summit, stating that Greenland “is not for sale.”
