Far-right Romanian politician Călin Georgescu, who won the annulled first round of Romania’s presidential elections, stated that his remarks about the potential annexation of “Romanian lands” in Ukraine were purely theoretical. He insisted that Romanian politicians have the right to discuss such matters.

As reported by Digi24, Georgescu made these comments during a televised appearance on Sunday.

He explained that his mention of Ukraine’s partition was “a purely theoretical hypothesis” and dismissed critics of his statements as “short-sighted.”

“We must learn from our historical experience. The world is changing… During World War II, we made many mistakes and did not fully understand how to position ourselves. Greater Romania became Lesser Romania. That is the reality,” Georgescu said, adding that “it is good to be prepared for anything.”

Last week, Georgescu repeatedly referred to “Romanian territories in Ukraine,” echoed Russian propaganda narratives by calling Ukraine “a fabricated state,” and described President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a “semi-dictator.”

Following his statements, Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.
