U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he would consider imposing additional sanctions on Russia as its war against Ukraine approaches its third anniversary, according to CNN.

When asked if he would implement further sanctions should Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin refuse to negotiate, Trump responded, “Sounds likely.”

“We are talking with Zelenskyy. We will speak with President Putin very soon, and we will see what happens and how it unfolds,” Trump said.

The president criticized the European Union for not spending enough to support Ukraine and added that he would “consider” whether the U.S. will send additional weapons to Ukraine.

It is worth noting that the previous U.S. administration under Joe Biden worked intensively in its final months to transfer as much weaponry and financial aid to Kyiv as possible before leaving the White House.

Trump also confirmed discussing the war in Ukraine during a recent phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping: “He has great power, just as we do. I told him that he should help settle this.”

The U.S. president emphasized that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy seeks peace.

“But it takes two to tango. We’ll see what comes of it,” Trump concluded.
