In an interview with the Italian TV channel RaiNews24, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia’s concessions on the occupied territories would not bring peace, but would only postpone a new wave of aggression. He warned that such a development would pose a real threat to the European continent.
The President emphasized that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin would not limit himself to Ukraine. “Putin will not stop. If you just sit down at the negotiating table today and give up the territories, he will just rub his hands and say: ‘Okay, we are getting ready, we need a year or two, a couple of years, and we will come with a new wave. He will definitely come to Europe,” Zelenskyy said.
The Head of State emphasized that Putin must feel the consequences of his aggression. “It is painful and expensive. He and his people should feel why they should not go with a new wave of war next time. That it will be painful if they take new such steps,” he said.
The President also categorically rejected the idea of concessions, emphasizing that this would only allow Russia to regain strength for another aggression. Zelenskyy believes that any recognition of the occupied territories is unacceptable. “It is legally impossible to recognize the occupied territories. Otherwise, it will go further, to other states. And you will see it – God forbid – but you will see it,” Zelensky emphasized.
According to the head of state, Putin’s ambitions are aimed at expanding Russia’s influence and creating an image of an invincible state. “He wants to go down in history as a person who takes away land, who has a state that no one can defeat. This is his sick desire,” Zelenskyy explained.
The President also called on the international community to unite in countering Russia’s aggression and supporting Ukraine. In his opinion, only decisive actions aimed at punishing the aggressor will be able to stop the Kremlin’s expansionist plans and ensure stability in Europe.
