Aid to Ukraine is much less costly for the US than the possible consequences of Russia’s victory in the war. Such conclusions were made by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), which is cited by Bloomberg.
According to the AEI report, if Russia succeeds in Ukraine, the US will have to increase military spending by $808 billion by 2029 to counter further threats in Europe. This will raise the Pentagon’s defense budget from the planned $4.4 trillion to $5.2 trillion.
A Russian victory will not only create new threats to European security, but also increase the risk of aggression against NATO countries. In this case, the US will face much greater costs than it currently does, when it provides Ukraine with military and financial support.
“Short-term aid to Ukraine is much cheaper than the long-term costs of containing Russia after its victory,” the AEI report states.
US President-elect Donald Trump has not yet decided on his position on further support for Ukraine. He has repeatedly stated that he may review or reduce aid depending on the situation.
Aid to Ukraine is not only a moral but also an economically beneficial decision for the US, as it allows avoiding much greater costs in the future.
