Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has firmly dismissed the possibility of Canada joining the United States, following repeated jokes by President-elect Donald Trump about such a scenario.

Trudeau made his statement on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing: “There is absolutely no chance that Canada will become part of the United States.”

He added, “Workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other’s greatest partners in trade and security.”

This comes after Trump threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian goods, accusing Ottawa of failing to address trade and immigration issues.

Negotiations between Trudeau and Trump have been marked by Trump’s recurring jokes about Canada as the “51st state of the U.S.”

Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly responded to Trump’s remarks, stating that they reflect “a complete misunderstanding of what makes Canada a strong country.”

Meanwhile, Trump has also revived discussions about his desire to acquire Greenland, a Danish territory, accompanying these comments with a visit by his son to the island.
