Ukraine keeps fighting for increased military support from Germany, achieving positive results to this end.
This was stated by the Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany, Oleksiy Makeiev, who spoke in a comment to Ukrinform.
“Every day there’s good news. It may not be public, but what President (of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy – ed.) and Chancellor (of Germany Olaf Scholz – ed.) talked about on Monday is already being implemented on Wednesday. So everything will be Ukraine!” the ambassador said in response to the question of whether Kyiv continues to fight for an increase in Germany’s military support for Ukraine in next year’s budget.
The diplomat admitted that the Ukraine issue is present in Germany’s election campaign.
“I cannot be part of this election campaign, although sometimes I want to stand next to a desk somewhere in a pedestrian zone in Berlin with a Ukrainian flag and also talk to people,” the ambassador joked. At the same time, he has been explaining to the Germans why Ukraine is important.
“The fact that Ukraine is actually at the center of the election campaign is to our advantage, that’s if Ukraine is not exploited for populist purposes and if political forces refrain from instilling fear. Because people are already scared, the Russians are sowing fear, so why support them in this?” the Ukrainian diplomat said.
His other message, a signal to the democratic parties in Germany is “Please, don’t argue over Ukraine, almost all of you have the same opinion on Ukraine, with the exception of certain details, you all support Ukraine, so you don’t need to build your election campaign on populist slogans; support for Ukraine should be the basis for your election campaign.”
Makeiev called it regrettable that during the debates in the Bundestag on Friday, different parties and factions “rammed” into each other when discussing the topic of support for Ukraine. But, he admitted, this is part of democratic culture. It is important that all democratic political forces expressed support for Ukraine, the diplomat emphasized.
The non-democratic forces did not surprise the ambassador, who was present in the hall during the debate: there was an impression that their speeches were drafted in Moscow, although these parties would never agree to admit this.
As reported, the the liberals initiated a discussion in the Bundestag on the issue of strengthening support for Ukraine, including on the transfer of long-range Taurus missiles.
