President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expects the newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump to support Ukraine in potential negotiations with Moscow regarding the war. He emphasized that a “strong Ukraine” is the foundation for any talks.
In an interview with “Ukrainian Radio,” Zelenskyy stated that the main condition is Ukraine’s strength—whether on the battlefield or in diplomacy.
The president added that support for values and justice equates to support for Ukraine, stressing that neutrality is not an option for a mediator.
“Ukraine must not stand alone against Russia, provided Ukraine is strong. How can there be negotiations with a murderer? Talking to Putin under our current conditions, without reinforcement, would mean entering negotiations with a losing position for Ukraine. That’s not about a just peace. In a weak position, there’s no point in even being at the negotiating table.
Trump’s stance is crucial, as is America’s overall attitude toward Ukraine. Today, they are on Ukraine’s side, and that matters.
It’s impossible to say abstractly, ‘I am a mediator, so I cannot take sides.’ That doesn’t work when international law is being violated.
America must maintain its position that Russia is the aggressor. This status must remain unchanged. Only then can we proceed. This is one of the key prerequisites for any negotiation platform. Additionally, elements of our victory plan must be included.” Zelenskyy stated.
Zelenskyy also emphasized that he would take any conversation seriously only if it were directly with Trump, not his advisers.
“With all due respect to any entourage, this is a matter for presidents. Everything must be in line with the law. Until he is inaugurated, Trump and his team cannot participate in all processes or make definitive decisions. They lack such authority. Our teams will work to prepare a meaningful and productive meeting. I will share specific outcomes or directions with our society openly after a substantive meeting with President Trump, once he assumes full presidential powers.” he added.
