Estonian Prime Minister Kriistian Mihal has stated that support for Ukraine in the coming months will determine the future of the European Union, particularly as European countries must do more to protect Kyiv and themselves after Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Mihal emphasized that allowing Russia to change Ukraine’s borders by force would undermine European values. He urged EU countries to increase their defense spending to counter the threat posed by the Kremlin and to demonstrate to Trump that Europe is serious about security issues.
He also highlighted that the outcome of the Ukraine conflict would have a significant impact on the European system based on values and rules. Mihal’s remarks come as he attends the European Political Community summit in Budapest, where EU leaders are discussing the results of the U.S. election and considering their response to the possibility of Trump’s second term.
Earlier, Mihal called for a significant increase in EU defense spending, warning that without such an increase, Europe would not be taken seriously.
