Reports about China aiding Russia are undermining China’s attempts to portray itself as a “neutral mediator” in the war, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Western officials continue to highlight China’s efforts to support Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. The Times revealed that Western authorities have discovered that a Chinese company is sending a series of military drones to Russia for testing and potential use by Russian forces in Ukraine.
A Western official noted that a Chinese company signed a deal with Russia in 2023 and stated that there is “clear evidence that Chinese companies are supplying Russia with lethal weapons for use in Ukraine.”
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken mentioned that about 70% of Russia’s imports of machine tools and 90% of microelectronics come from China and Hong Kong, and that Russia uses these imports to manufacture missiles, armored vehicles, and ammunition.
Blinken added that China’s actions “diverge from reality,” as it claims to want peace in Ukraine but allows its companies to assist Russia’s military efforts.
“China has repeatedly tried to present itself as a neutral mediator in the war in Ukraine, and ongoing reports of Chinese assistance to Russia’s military undermine this claim,” analysts stated in the report.
