EU spokesperson Peter Stano, during a press briefing, stated that new threats from Russian leader Vladimir Putin about using nuclear weapons against non-nuclear countries are yet another indication of his irresponsible behavior. These threats will not change the EU’s stance on continuing its support for Ukraine.

A journalist had asked how the EU would respond to Putin’s latest “lowering of the threshold” for using Russian nuclear weapons against non-nuclear states.

Stano emphasized that this is not the first time Putin has resorted to nuclear threats.

“This is just a continuation of Putin’s very irresponsible and unacceptable behavior, showing the world his true nature, especially during the high-level week of the UN General Assembly,” he said.

The spokesperson noted that the Kremlin leader “is not ashamed to play nuclear games repeatedly.” Stano firmly rejected these threats, stressing that the EU’s position remains unchanged.

He also pointed out that the EU is working to communicate this stance to international partners, highlighting how reckless and irresponsible Putin’s actions are, particularly as the leader of a permanent member of the UN Security Council, whose main duty is to maintain global peace.

“This is just a continuation of his behavior and exposes his true nature during a very significant high-level international event currently taking place in New York,” Stano concluded.
