9th meeting of Intergovernmental Ukrainian-Latvian Commission on Economic, Industrial, Scientific and Technical Cooperation confirmed significant potential for expanding bilateral cooperation

The 9th meeting of the Intergovernmental Ukrainian-Latvian Commission on Economic, Industrial, Scientific and Technical Cooperation took place in Riga, Latvia.

On the Latvian side, the Intergovernmental Commission was co-chaired by Ilze Indriksone, Minister for Economics of the Republic of Latvia, and on the Ukrainian side by Oleh Nemchinov, Minister of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

The Intergovernmental Commission worked in the following areas:

  • bilateral economic relations;
  • support for Ukraine’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration;
  • support for Ukraine and its people;
  • cooperation in the field of transport;
  • cooperation in the field of agriculture and forestry;
  • cooperation in the field of digital transformation;
  • cooperation in the field of energy;
  • cooperation in the field of clean technologies;
  • cooperation in the space sector;
  • cooperation in the field of education and science, youth policy, physical culture and sports;
  • cooperation in regional development, spatial planning and land management.

The co-chairs stressed the importance of cooperation in the format of the Intergovernmental Ukrainian-Latvian Commission, which had been an important communication and practical platform for discussing areas of mutual interest and identifying areas for further cooperation since 2004, even amid the challenges faced by the parties. Both sides expressed their gratitude for the successful meetings in the areas of security and defense, energy, transport and logistics held on March 22, 2023.

The Latvian side condemned Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified military aggression against Ukraine and reaffirmed its unwavering support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. Full responsibility for the war and its consequences lies solely with Russia. Persons responsible for the crimes of aggression committed by Russia against Ukraine, brutal war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Russian armed forces against Ukrainian civilians and military personnel must be brought to justice. Russia, as the aggressor, and all accomplices must be held fully accountable for the crimes committed and the destruction caused to Ukraine.

Latvia supports Ukraine, its Government and the Ukrainian people, and will continue to provide political, financial, humanitarian and military assistance to Ukraine.

“The meeting showed significant potential for expanding economic cooperation, particularly in trade, transport, energy and investment. It is important that we agreed to increase facilitation by both countries of contacts between business communities and organizations.

The Government of Ukraine is open to a constructive dialogue with its Latvian partners on all pressing issues of deepening relations not only in the areas discussed but also in others that will be of mutual interest in the future.

We look forward to continuing a fruitful dialogue within the framework of the 10th meeting of the Commission, which will be held in a stable, strong and free Ukraine,” said Oleh Nemchinov, Minister of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
