8.2-Magnitude Earthquake Struck Near Fiji

Today, an earthquake measuring a powerful  8.2 magnitude on the Richter Scale shook the ocean floor close to the islands of Fiji and Tonga.

The epicenter of the earthquake 559 kilometers below the surface.

Fortunately, due to the depth of the earthquake, it couldn’t cause any serious damage, the United States Geological Survey said.

The quake was initially reported as a magnitude 8.0 and then upgraded to 8.2, a magnitude that could cause tremendous damage had it not been so deep.

The epicenter was located 270 kilometers east of Levuka in Fiji and 443 kilometers west of Neiafu in Tonga.

The area where the earthquake struck is prone to earthquakes. It’s known as the Ring of Fire.
