46,000 people in Luhansk region without power after Russia-backed militants shelling

Luhansk Thermal Power Plant shelled by Donbas militants

February 21, over 45,800 people in the Shchastia district, a Kyiv-controlled part of the Luhansk region, are left without power after severe shelling of both civilian houses and infrastructural facilities. Luhansk governor Serhiy Gaidai reported it on his Facebook.

According to him, the inspection revealed that the wires were damaged as a result of the shelling. Gaidai added that currently, the local emergency services cannot perform any recovery works, as the attacks continue and there are no safety guarantees for the crews.

Currently, Shchastia settlemetn is closed for entry and exit.

Russia-backed militants refuse to observe the truce and continue shelling.

Earlier today, Luhansk Thermal Power Plant reported that as a result of the hostile shelling in the Luhansk region, Shchastia settlement was de-energized, Luhansk TPP, which is the main source of heat and electricity in the region, was disconnected from the grid.

February 20, 80 ceasefire violations by the armed forces of Russian-backed militants were recorded, 72 of which were performed by the weapons prohibited by the Minsk agreements. 

February 17, the situation in the Donbas conflict area worsened after a relative lull. As reported earlier, Russia-backed militants shelled a number of civilian facilities, including a school and a kindergarten.

Since 2014 the armed conflict waged by Russia has claimed the lives of about 14,000 people, injured at least 30,000, including civilians, and forced more than 1.5 million people to flee their homes in Crimea and Donbas to escape occupation for the government-controlled territory of Ukraine.
